STEAMworks: Zine Library

A place to encourage discovery, creation, and learning—beyond the conventional—by supplying tools, inspiration, and know-how to spark the making, exploring, failing, sharing, trying-again, teaching and experiencing that make for a rich education.

Send us your zines!

DIY independent publishing has a rich history that long predates even America's first notable zinester, a guy in Philly called Thomas Paine. He was a troublemaker. Thousands of people read his zines. Then some other stuff happened.Initial set of 20 zines for Rohrbach Library's new collection

Here in nearby Kutztown, several profs at the university encourage students to create zines, graphic novels, and comix. As you might expect from a school with such prestigious art and design programs, many of those zines are brilliant. That's just common sense!

STEAMworks is thrilled to be the clearinghouse for our library's new initiative, the Brain Bug Alternative and Radical Literature, Comix & Independent Publishing Zine Library

Rohrbach Library Director Martha Stevenson's profound enthusiasm for highlighting the work of the KU community gives the Zine Library its central focus—the examples at left were all produced by artists at this campus and by their teacher, Prof. Kevin McCloskey—but we're also willing to include zines from creators of all ages and backgrounds, particularly ones in the Eastern PA region.

Want in? Email us at steamworks@kutztown.edu or just send a copy or two to:

Along with its open browsing shelves in our library, we keep an archive—just in case. That's why an extra copy is nice to have. (Local zines can go into our online archive, where we offer viewable PDFs and keep high-quality archival TIFFs.) And, hey: be sure to tell us who made the zines and where & when, along with titles and any other crucial info in a note, if that's not expressed so clearly in the publication itself.

If your zine has a cover price we'll pay you upon acceptance. Or if you prefer to donate, we'll provide a receipt. If what you send is not the right fit for our collection we'll return your stuff, and no hard feelings: libraries have finite quantities of space, so we're not able to add everything we get to our shelves.

Wondering how to make a zine in the first place? STEAMworks can help you do that! We even have the right kind of staplers, so get in touch if this sort of thing intrigues you.

Look, here's the Zine Library's catalog!
