Eligibility: Interlibrary loan services are provided to Kutztown University faculty (full-time, part-time, adjunct, and emeriti), students (presently matriculating in courses), staff (presently employed) and administration (presently employed) in good standing with the Library. Community patrons and patrons from other institutions should seek interlibrary loan services from their public or institutional library.
Limitations: Patrons may not place more than five Interlibrary Loan requests per day.
Material which may be borrowed: Any type of material may be requested from another library, but the lending library will decide in each case whether or not a particular item can be provided.
Most libraries will not ordinarily lend the following types of materials:
Newly published material
Theses and dissertations
Old, rare or valuable material
Reference and genealogical material
Audio and videocassettes, sound recordings, and motion picture films
Entire issues of periodicals
Material in high demand at the lending library; curriculum material, including textbooks
Scripts, screen plays, libretti, and scores
The library will not request the following types of materials:
Material owned by the Kutztown University Library
Multiple copies of a title or article
Titles not yet published
Easily obtained materials are usually available within several days. Newer articles can often arrive within 24 hours. More difficult items can take as long as two to four weeks. Because of policies at lending libraries, certain materials, such as rare or very new books, may be difficult to obtain. You will be notified if the library is unsuccessful in filling your request.
In general the library is able to obtain materials at no cost. The library never orders from a source that charges unless the item is not available free and you have indicated a willingness in advance to pay.
Loan Period & Renewals:
Typically, books are available for 2-5 weeks, at the discretion of the loaning library. The loaning library may impose restrictions, such as “in library use” or “no renewals”. If you need additional time to use the material, you can request a renewal. The loaning library grants permission for renewals, not Kutztown University Library staff. Renewals must be requested before the due date. We cannot request renewals for items that are already overdue.
Check Out and Return of Materials:
Interlibrary loan items may be picked up at the Library's Information Commons Desk. Interlibrary loan items should also be returned at the Information Commons Desk. Please do not place interlibrary loan items in the book bins near the entrances to the Library.
Please make every effort to return the items by the specified due date. Interlibrary loan service will be suspended for those who abuse the privilege, including those who repeatedly fail to pick up requested interlibrary loan material or who fail to return materials in a timely fashion.
You are responsible for ILL materials from the time items are checked out until they are returned. If the materials are lost or damaged while in your possession, you must pay any repair, replacement, or processing fees which the lending library charges.
The Interlibrary Loan Office is located in room 100B of the library.
The Rohrbach Library provides free loans to all organizations within Pennsylvania as well as reciprocating institutions in the United States. We use IDS (#141).
Loan renewals must be requested in advance of loan expiration. Loan renewals are for 30 days when granted. Libraries failing to return items after loan expiration will be subject to billing procedures and loss of borrowing privileges.
Items Not Loaned:
Textbooks, Archives, AV, Curriculum Materials, Folios, Microforms, Newspapers, New books (published within the last 2 years), Periodicals, Reference, Rental, Reserves, and Maps.
