Government agencies are continually collecting statistics which can be very useful in a research project. Some excellent sources for statistics collected by federal government agencies include:

Uniform Crime Reports
Compilation of annual crime statistics for the United States

Reports
GAO Reports - browse reports of the Gov't Accounting Office by topic.  The GAO is an independent nonpartisan federal agency that acts as the investigative arm of Congress.

NCJRS
The National Criminal Justice Reference Service disseminates publications from the United States Department of Justice's Office of Justice Programs (OJP) agencies, as well as the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) and National Institute of Corrections (NIC).
