STEAMworks: What we like on the Web

A place to encourage discovery, creation, and learning—beyond the conventional—by supplying tools, inspiration, and know-how to spark the making, exploring, failing, sharing, trying-again, teaching and experiencing that make for a rich education.

Tools for Making

Autodesk Circuits is a powerful browser-based electronics simulator that enables you to work with Arduino sketches and sensors without needing any of the equipment; you can then export your sketches to flash to an actual Arduino (yes, we've got 'em at STEAMworks),  Autodesk Circuits is now part of Tinkercad, our favorite browser-based intro to 3D modeling software. Lots of folks at our place have quickly learned how to use Tinkercad to put together useful objects, and then easily made files that they've 3D printed right here!

Learning + Teaching

Gear Up University - Spatial visual thinking!  This class is open ended, creative and challenging, offering a counterbalance to the quantitative only approach to teaching. Our current “words and numbers” system has failed to develop the spatially gifted student to any meaningful extent. After years of research, the following curriculum, in particular the concept of Conceptual Design Blending, is an example of what actually works in today's classroom.

MISSION

To encourage discovery, creation, and learning—beyond the conventional—by supplying. tools, inspiration, and know-how to spark the making, exploring, failing, sharing,trying-again, teaching and experiencing that make for a rich education.
