A resource guide to increase diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging for neurodiverse students. This guide was created for Rohrbach Library by Trisha Faust, MLIS and Dr. Stefani Gomez.

Defining Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia is defined by The Dyspraxia Foundation USA as "a neurological disorder throughout the brain that results in life-long impaired motor, memory, judgment, processing, and other cognitive skills" (2025).

 Dyspraxia affects 1 in 10 people. 

 

This animation briefly explains dyspraxia and how it may affect a person, mainly impacting their fine and/or gross motor skills. The issues that dyspraxia can cause a person can greatly affect a person's learning. Bringing more attention to dyspraxia can increase understanding and support to those who need it!

The above video comes from the National Center for Learning Disabilities, featuring an expert, Dr. Sheldon H. Horowitz, explaining dyspraxia. He breaks down how dyspraxia may affect a person's motor skills, speech, planning and completion of tasks, and/or their memory and focus. He expresses that with proper supports, such as speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, or physical therapy, people are able to find issues diminish, disappear, or they find alternative ways to cope.
