Before the days of EBSCO and other online databases, researchers found magazine, newspaper and journal articles using paper indices. The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature indexes popular magazines and newspapers. The index was published in yearly (sometimes 6-month) volumes. One can look up a topic (birth control, for example) and see which magazines and newspapers published articles on that topic in that year. We have this index available 1890-2002. We have some (but not many) of the periodicals that are indexed by this resource. See the "micfofilm" and "bound periodicals" tabs for the available titles.
The Reader's Guide to Periodical Literature is located just before the bound periodicals on the top floor of the library.
