This guide is to help with the Summer Session 1, 2025 section of COMP 201 that needs to provide a transcript of an individual llibrary session on Zoom to Dr. Arnold.

Assignment

This file is so long, It does not fit in a Springshare window.  So you have to use this link:

Getting to Zoom

"Andy's students will be using chat to get research help next week (June 9-13.)  Andy would like them to speak with us via Zoom and would like us to send them a link to the zoom recording and send the transcript (as an attachment.)

Here are the directions the students will see:

  1. Start a chat with a librarian here: https://library.kutztown.edu/researchhelp

Hours – 10am-2pm Monday-Friday.  (The librarians are probably logged in before 10am and probably until about 4pm. Email flatley@kutztown.edu if you need a different time and we’ll try to make it happen.)

  1. Once in the chat, the librarian will greet you.  Make sure you send the librarian your name and email address, so we can email you a link to the video and the transcript.
  2. The librarian will send you a zoom link.
  3. Open the zoom link.  The librarian will be there.  This could take a minute.
  4. The librarian will record the zoom. You discuss your topic and your research, you’ll do a few searches on library databases. The librarian will share their screen so you can see what’s happening.
  5. After the zoom is ended, the librarian will email you a link to the video and a transcript.

The students are starting a chat, and you need to send your zoom link to them through the chat. Please make sure you get their name and email address.  The student will go to zoom and wait for you.  We must use zoom this way (completely outside LibAnswers) for a transcript to be available.  If you use the zoom option ("Request Screenshare") through the chat, it won't work. The students should be expecting all of this and Andy asked them to have their cameras on...

If you would like more info, feel free to reach out to Andy.”

What we are expected to cover

"Some things Andy is hoping we might discuss with the students (who are writing about topics related to their major):

Points to hit in Zoom – Andy’s class

  1. What’s the name of the Reference Librarian you worked with?
  2. Name the Professional database(s) in your topic and major that you used.
  3. Explain: Reliable sources. Are they: Published in a reliable source, peer reviewed, footnoted?
  4. Used Boolean Search (NANO: Near, And, Not, Or)
  5. Prospected the footnotes for gold
  6. Searched the article as if it was a database. Learned from One Search/Source and Used it for your Next Search (Research Cycles.)
  7. Use the “Cite” button to properly cite your sources. (Please choose the Citation style/format that best fits your major. All I care about is that it be complete and relatively consistent.) (Complete: Author, Title, Journal/Book, and date published. In this case: Post 1999.)"

Capturing the transcript and sending it to the student & Andy

"Once the zoom is started, start recording.  End the meeting when you're done. The video will take a few minutes to process, and then will be available in the zoom web portal (kutztown.zoom.us) - here's a video of me accessing a video link & transcript: https://app.screencast.com/oRqdp3n9oEp5A?conversation=tsVi8IwHD4WHer0m521WuW "

Andy Arnold's video clip on setting correct parameters for sharing session video

Hi Krista, I just thought of something that might cause a complication. When you share a zoom video, it defaults to “Only KU faculty, staff, and students can view.”

Here’s the problem: Students are sometimes not signed in properly to Zoom or to their KU accounts. When that happens, they cannot view the video … and then they get frustrated or give up or ask that you become an IT professional.

I always click on the overall “Share” button in the upper right hand corner of the Zoom video management screen, and click on “Everyone…”

I made a video showing the above in case that’s easier for you.
