Finding information online from the library website:
Start at the Library Home page --> put your topic in
- the white Search Everything box to find print books and DVDs, articles, book chapters, ebooks and streaming video
- the Library Catalog tab to find print books and DVDs that are physically in the library, or
- the Databases tab for just the online sources and streaming video.
If you are looking for Images for your essay
On the library homepage, select the tab in the search box called Databases, then View All Databases
- Images from contemporary photographers
- Images you would see in magazines, on social media
- All can be easily embedded on a website, all are free
- The library's largest image database.
- Lots of fine art, crafts -- images of things you would find in some type of museum.
If you are looking for examples of published photo essays
The Library Catalog (tab in the search box on the library homepage)
- Although the databases do not do a good job searching "photo essay", the library catalog does it best.
- Put PHOTO ESSAY in as your search terms.
- Main Collection means you can take the book out. LibSci (Library Science) and Curric (Curriculum Material) indicates a children's book you can borrow.
From the library homepage, select the POPULAR DATABASES icon and look for
Academic Search Ultimate (ASU) from EBSCO.
- Scroll down on the landing page. Under DOCUMENT TYPE, there are many to choose from. For this assignment, there is no Photo-Essay, but there is an ESSAY.
- To select more that one option in ASU, hold down the CTRL (Windows) or COMMAND (Mac) key while you select.
- Do your search, and then on the page with Search Results, you can narrow by date, source type, and region or individual newspaper.
Proquest Research Library has magazines, journals, newspapers, and materials on all subjects. The information goes from everyday knowledge to highly complex research journals.
- From the landing page, which is the Advanced Search page, type in your search
- Scroll down, and limit your search by Date.
- Under DOCUMENT TYPE, Proquest uses the term ESSAY, but not PHOTO-ESSAY
