Databases for Magazine and Journal Articles

 

Start at the Library Home page with the tile labeled A-Z Databases or you can use the links below:

Newspaper & Journal Articles:

  1. Academic Search Ultimate from EBSCO. Almost all the entries in this database have the article attached, which means it is a "full-text" database.  Also, it is part of the EBSCOHost interface, so you can use MY EBSCO to save the citations.  If you don't know about MY EBSCO, you should register at the "Sign In" tab at the top and set up an account.
  2. Proquest like Academic Search Complete, Proquest is a database that has magazines, newspapers, and journals on all subjects. The information goes from everyday knowledge to highly complex research journals.
  3. JSTOR is a largely full-text database of ebooks and articles from scholarly peer-reviewed journals.  There are a lot of back issues for JSTOR journals, JSTOR is especially good for information in the Humanities.
  4. Newsbank (Newspaper Database) - Major newspapers from around the world.  Full-text - the articles are all in the database. 

Other sources

  1. CQ Researcher publishes 44 reports each year on contemporary, social, and political topics. Each report is the equivalent of approximatly 20 pages. Includes extensive bibliographies, websites and other resources.
  2. Biography in Context is the library's largest database for biographical information.  It is good for background information for your icon analysis.

Finding Opinion or Editorial Articles in Magazines and Newspapers


Finding Information in online newspapers and journals

 

Start at the Library Home page --> under COLLECTIONS on left -->select POPULAR DATABASES

Newspaper & Journal Articles:

  1. Newsbank (Newspaper Database) 
    1. Newspapers from around the world, including you local newspaper.  Watch for the date range that is included.
    2. Full-text - the articles are all in the database.
    3. From the NEWSBANK homepage, under the Search Box, use MORE SEARCH OPTIONS.
    4. Add a line that includes keywords for the type of article, such as OPINION, or EDITORIAL.
  2. Academic Search Ultimate (ASU) from EBSCO
    1. Scroll down on the landing page.  Under DOCUMENT TYPE, Select an option that fits, like Opinion, or Editorial, or letters to the Editors
    2. In the second column, under PUBLICATION TYPE, select Periodical or Newspaper.  A Periodical is a Magazine.  
    3. To select more that one option in ASU, hold down the CTRL (Windows) or COMMAND (Mac) key while you select.
    4. Do your search, and then on the page with Search Results, you can narrow by date, source type, and region or individual newspaper.
  3. Proquest Research Library has magazines, newspapers, and materials on all subjects. The information goes from everyday knowledge to highly complex research journals.
    1. From the landing page, which is the Advanced Search page, type in your search
    2. Scroll down, and limit your search by Date.
    3. In the SOURCE TYPE box, check off Magazines and Newspaper.
    4. Under DOCUMENT TYPE, Proquest uses the term COMMENTARY instead of OPINION, and there are also Letters to the Editors, Editorials, and Editorial Cartoons!
    5. SEARCH
    6. You can further modify your seach on the Results List page.
