Interlibrary Loan

For Kutztown University Patrons   |    For Borrowing Libraries

About:

Interlibrary Loan is a service that allows users in one library to borrow materials from another library. The requested material is usually sent to the requesting institution as a temporary loan with a specified return date or loan period. The conditions of this service are set by the Pennsylvania Interlibrary Loan Code; the National Interlibrary Loan Code, 1980; and U.S. Code Title 17 concerning copyright law.

Eligibility:

Interlibrary Loan services are provided to:

  • Kutztown University Faculty (full-time, part-time, adjunct, and emeriti)
  • Students (presently matriculating in courses)
  • Staff and Administration (presently employed)

All users must maintain good standing with the Library.

Community patrons and patrons from other institutions should seek interlibrary loan services from their public or institutional library.

Material which may be borrowed:

Any type of material may be requested from another library, but the lending library will decide in each case whether or not a particular item can be provided.

Most libraries typically will not lend the following types of materials:

  • Curriculum material, including textbooks
  • Newly published material
  • Theses and dissertations
  • Old, rare or valuable material
  • Reference and genealogical material
  • Audio-visual materials - DVD, Blu-ray, videocassettes, and sound recordings
  • Entire issues of periodicals
  • Material in high demand at the lending library
  • Scripts, screen plays, libretti, and scores
  • Multi-volume sets
  • Psychological testing tools

The library will not request the following types of materials:

  • Textbooks
  • Material owned by the Kutztown University Library
  • Multiple copies of a title or article
  • Titles not yet published
  • eBooks or streaming audio/video
  • Kindles, e-readers, and other tablet devices
  • Items in defunct formats
  • Psychological testing tools

   Delivery Time:

Easily obtained materials are usually available within several days. Newer articles can often arrive within 24 hours. More difficult items can take as long as two to four weeks. Because of policies at lending libraries, certain materials, such as rare or very new books, may be difficult to obtain. You will be notified if the library is unsuccessful in filling your request.

Costs:

In general the library is able to obtain materials at no cost. The library never orders from a source that charges unless the item is not available free and you have indicated a willingness in advance to pay.

Loan Period & Renewals:

Typically, books are available for 2-5 weeks, at the discretion of the lending library. The lending library may include conditions such as “Library Use Only” or "No Renewals." If you need additional time to use the material, you may be able to request a renewal. Please note that the lending library grants permission for renewals, not Kutztown University staff. Renewals must be requested before the due date, and items that are already overdue cannot be renewed.

Check Out and Return of Materials:

Interlibrary loan items may be picked up at the Library's Circulation Desk. Interlibrary Loan items should also be returned at the Circulation Desk.

Please return items by the specified due date. Interlibrary Loan service will be suspended for those who abuse the privilege, including those who repeatedly fail to pick up requested materials or who fail to return materials in a timely fashion.

You are responsible for ILL materials from the time items are checked out until they are returned. If the materials are lost or damaged while in your possession, you are liable for the costs of repair, replacement, or processing fees charged by the lending library.

Location:

Interlibrary Loan is located in room 100B of the library, on the first floor. The office is physically located between the Circulation Desk (100) and the Writing Center (100C).

Contact:

Phone 610-683-4158; email kupill@kutztown.edu. The office is open between 7:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Lending Guidelines for Borrowing Libraries

About:

The Rohrbach Library provides free loans to all organizations within Pennsylvania and the continental United States. Reciprocity is preferred, but not essential.  If you would like to enter into a formal reciprocal agreement with us, please contact kupill@kutztown.edu

We use IDS (#141). Interlibrary Loan accepts requests from non-OCLC libraries via email, snail-mail, and telephone. We also participate in Access Pennsylvania.

Non-returnables (copies of articles or book chapters) are provided via Article Exchange. Electronic retrieval information is provided to the email address supplied in the ILL request.

Renewals:

Loan renewals should be requested in advance of loan expiration. Loan renewals are granted liberally and according to the renewal dates requested by the borrowing library. Libraries who fail to return items within a reasonable period after loan expiration will be subject to an invoice.

Items Not Loaned:

Archives, AV, Folios, Curriculum Materials, Microforms, Newspapers, New books (published within the last 2 years), Periodicals, Reference, Rental ("Leisure Reading" or "Browsing" items), Reserves, and Maps.
