CDE 141 Illustrations in Children's Literature: Pop-up Books

To accompany the CDE 141 class

Introduction

Pop-up books really need to be seen to be appreciated.  So below you will find videos that show you the pages popping up and folding back down.

There are two outstanding illustrators that brought pop-up books to new levels in the early 1990's and 2000's:  Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart.  Robert Sabuda is now semi-retired and Matthew Reinhart has limited his recent work to brands such as:  Lego, Harry Potter, Pixar and Disney.

Robert Sabuda

A collection of Robert Sabuda's more dramatic pages from his fairy tale series.

He often works with plain white pop-ups against bright colored backgrounds.

Matthew Reinhart

A very enthusiastic Matthew Reinhart has a series on YouTube called Pop-up Master Class where he shows you how to make the different devices used in a pop-up book, like pull tabs, reverse layers, and extended platforms.

Enjoy a tour of Matthew Reinhart's Alice in Wonderland.
