Illustration Styles Book Tastings:
This book tasting came about when a professor in our Department of Communication Design attended a meeting I organized for anyone at KU who was interested in children's literature. Her students were creating books as their final projects for an illustration course. Again, I worked with the course professor and that department's liaison librarian--Sue Czerny--to create this event. We developed this tasting to showcase various illustration styles so that they could get ideas for what they may want to use. We featured books from the following categories.
- Simple Line Drawings
- One or two-color artwork
- Wordless picture books
- Interesting/experimental type design
- Simple graphic style/shapes
- Vector/Simple style
- Collage
- Cut paper
- Woodcut/linoleum cut
- Watercolor/ink wash
- Black & White illustrations
- Caldecott winning illustrations
- Unusual page formats
- Pop-up formats
- Graphic Novels
- Photo Illustrations
During the COVID pandemic, we still wanted to offer this tasting, so we created an online guide with some examples for students : CDE 141 Illustrations in Children's Literature
