Book Tasting at Kutztown University

Book tasting is a wonderful way to engage students or readers in library materials. This guide will showcase several of the book tastings we do at Kutztown University of Pennsylvania.

Book Tasting for Art History

Art History Book Tastings:

Through a chance seating arrangement at a breakfast sponsored by our Provost, I had the chance to introduce another collaborator to book tasting. Dr. Pierette Kulpa, who teaches art history at KU, partnered with me and her liaison librarian Dan Stafford to create two book tastings for her students. Dr. Kulpa created a handout/menu for her tastings and worked with the librarians to select books, set it up, and lead the tasting event. Dan Stafford worked to create LibGuides for these courses as well, which can be found at: Egypt LibGuide and  Renaissance LibGuide. In Spring 2024 we did another tasting for Dr. Kulpa's Baroque-period course. It was set up similarly to the ones you see below, but it stayed up for an entire week to give the students more time to come during or outside of class and work on their research with the materials and the librarians.

The students spent time working through the books and resources looking for information for a research project they were doing for their art history course.

The Renaissance:

As you can see in the first photo, we set up the room like the other tastings with the students in the center surrounded by the tables with books. Some of the books we had were e-books, so some of the tables have images on the table with a QR code that students can scan to get to the e-books. Other photos show closer views of some of the text sets. We placed blue table tents with the themes at each text set.
