The Addition of Science to the Social Studies Book Tasting:
Our book tasting journey began with the elementary-level social studies methods course. However, even with the first book tasting, we had a lot of great books that naturally would work for science as well. Our Wild Women text set was developed for NCSS Theme 3: People, Places, and Environments, and it focused on women working in and with their environment. (see title list below) When we talked to the students about the books, we noted the science tie-ins that the pre-service teachers could use. Eventually we expanded this idea and have the book tasting up for both the science methods course and the social studies methods course so that they students have time to look at the book specifically for each of those courses. Whether you are tying social studies to math or science or music or another area, there are a ton of children's books that can help you make those connections in ways that are informative, instructional, and fun for the students.
A few examples:
WILD WOMEN text set--loads of scientists and people working in nature or in their environment

FOREST text set--another text set for NCSS Theme 3--many of these books could be used for a science lesson in addition to social studies!

DISCOVERY text set--developed for NCSS Theme 8: Science, Technology, and Society--looks at people making discoveries in science, nature, engineering, etc.
